“… those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.” Galatians 5.24

‘Crucify the flesh’ is an intentional pursuit to put to death our old sin nature by the power of God’s Holy Spirit; but experience has taught us that this can be a life-long process. And because of the lengthiness of the process many of us succumb to a hybrid Spirit-flesh lifestyle where we take decisions and are led not exclusively by the Spirit of God but also, and sometimes to a higher degree, by our flesh.

We must understand that our life in Christ is ‘secure’ only if we ‘walk and live’ it by the Spirit. In Mark 2:22 Jesus said that new wine is safe only if put in new wine skin. Our attempt to put our new life in the ‘skin’ of our old nature can only lead to the loss of both. Our flesh – i.e. the natural man is incapable of sustaining our new life for as 1 Corinthians 2:14 puts it:

“… the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned…”

A flesh-Spirit walk might seem like its working but time and outcomes will prove its absurdity. May the LORD continually endue us with the power to increasingly walk and live by the Spirit so we live less and less by the flesh in Jesus name!
